The Humen fort sites are important coastal defense remains along both banks of the Humen waterway and major witnesses to modern China's maritime defense history.
The sites cover the Nansha side, including Upper Hengdang Fort, Lower Hengdang Fort, Dajiaoshan Fort and Puzhou Mountain Fort, as well as Weiyuan, Zhenyuan, Jingyuan and Shajiao forts on the Dongguan side.
Existing remains include Qing dynasty forts, gun pits, tunnels, gates, barracks, powder magazines and training grounds, many of which are nationally protected.
